There are a couple of very important considerations, that you should have in mind, before you proceed with your migration scenario.
It is a very wrong approach to expect, that an in-place upgrade will solve your existing Active Directory problems. If you have more than one DC which is necessary — backup all of them, or at least two DC. You cannot upgrade directly from Windows mixed, or Windows Server interim domain functional levels. In the following screencast, we demonstrate an upgrade of Windows Domain, by adding a new Windows Server Domain Controller.
Step1 We check and raise the Domain and Forest functional levels. You will also learn what the different schema versions mean. During the promotion process, the directory will be replicated from one of the other domain controllers. Active Directory domain services installation wizard appear, you can either enable the check box beside Use Advanced mode installation and Click Next , or keep it unselected and click on Next. On the Operating System Compatibility page, review the warning about the default security settings for Windows Server domain controllers, and then click Next.
On the Network Credentials page, type trainingtech. Enter user name and password for an account that must be either a member of the Enterprise Admins group, Domain Admins group or use Administrator account and Click Next.

Here, I configure as a member server within the existing domain. The dcpromo command will automatically install the relevant files on the computer prior to beginning the domain controller promotion process. This dialog box will start checking if Active Directory Domain Services binaries are installed, then will start installing them.
On the Select a Domain page, Select a domain for this additional domain controller page, and then click Next.
